Kissin To Play Opening Night Galas In September For New Seasons
Of Both New York & Los Angeles Philharmonics,
Plus Beethoven Concerto Cycles With Toronto, Chicago Symphony Orchestras

Pianist Evgeny Kissin takes listeners back to a great turning point in modern Russian music - the passing of the Romantic era into the complex soundscape of the early 20th century - on his latest recording for RCA Red Seal. The disc includes Alexander Scriabin's Five Preludes, Op. 15, and Sonata No. 3, Op. 23, in F-Sharp Minor; Nikolai Medtner's Sonata Reminiscenza, Op. 38 No. 1, in A Minor (from Forgotten Melodies, Cycle I); and Igor Stravinsky's Three Movements from P¿trouchka.

The release of the new CD comes as Kissin appears as soloist (in Beethoven's Emperor Concerto) in the opening-night galas of both the New York Philharmonic (Sept. 21), with Lorin Maazel conducting, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic (Sept. 29), under the direction of Esa-Pekka Salonen. He will also be soloist in complete cycles of the five Beethoven concertos with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra (Oct. 4-7), with Sir Andrew Davis conducting, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (Oct. 19-25), with Daniel Barenboim conducting.

When Kissin played Stravinsky's Three Movements from P¿trouchka in recital last April in New Jersey, the Newark Star-Ledger wrote, "Hundreds and hundreds of notes flew by, all ideally articulated with incredible finger strength, as Kissin mastered this riot of keyboard color É Russian bells and folk dances seemed to echo in the air." In the same review, the pianist was hailed for his expressive powers in the rarely heard Medtner sonata - "Kissin took care to bring the ardent, welling themes Medtner strung through his web of intricately crafted melancholy. He also played the lullaby-like ending with the subtlest beauty."

When Kissin played the same program a few days later at Carnegie Hall, The New York Times also praised his performance of the Stravinsky - "He pulled out all the stops, producing a vivid richly textured sound that suggested Stravinsky's swirling orchestration while retaining the chiseled edges that so perfectly suit the piano's timbre. Mostly, though, P¿trouchka is an essay in drama and character, and Mr. Kissin's vigorous but carefully considered shaping kept those qualities in view."

The new recording couples the Stravinsky and Medtner with virtuosic works by Scriabin - three Russian composers of roughly the same age who could not be more striking in their differences. The Scriabin pieces reflect the evolution of the composer's early twilight Romantic style into an ambitious, rhapsodic sound-world that was utterly unique to him. Medtner was an exact contemporary of Scriabin and Rachmaninoff, often called "the Russian Brahms," and his Sonata Reminiscenza (the tenth of his fourteen sonatas) was written in the harsh Russian winter of 1920, as he contemplated the necessity of emigrating to the West. Stravinsky's P¿trouchka excerpts were arranged for piano by the composer at the request of Arthur Rubinstein. Though Rubinstein played the formidably difficult arrangement throughout his career, he (as well as Vladimir Horowitz and Emil Gilels) never felt comfortable enough with the results to record them in the studio.

Hailed by London's Independent as "the greatest pianist of his generation, if not several others besides," Evgeny Kissin is perhaps the most acclaimed interpreter of the Romantic repertoire of his generation. He has recorded extensively for the RCA Red Seal and Sony Classical labels - both now a part of Sony BMG Masterworks - and his most recent release for RCA Red Seal was a recording of Schubert and Liszt. His all-Brahms disc, released by the label in 2003, was a nominee for the 46th annual Grammy¨ Awards.
